Tuesday’s Glorious Podcast

Monday, July 26th, 2010

It’s day one of Glorious Goodwood and what a wonderful week it is. Group races mingle with tip top handicaps, up and coming racehorses clash with battle hardened veterans and there’s more hard luck stories than a Las Vegas casino. It’s painful, but hopefully we can get the rub of the green and come out on top for the week.

To kick us off, Ross Brierley and David Kelner talk about nearly everything under the sun, Cornelius Lysaght goes through the card with a fine toothed comb and Declan O’Donoghue avoids Goodwood altogether and travels to Galway for day two of the finest Irish racing has to offer.

A top class week kicks off in style and you can catch it all on William Hill Radio.

Galway Festival: Irish Punters set to bet €70 million

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Bookmakers William Hill say around €70 million will be gambled by Irish punters on this year’s Galway Festival. That figure equates to an average of €10 million on each of the seven days of the festival.

The two feature races at Galway are the Tote Galway Plate on Wednesday and the Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday, and Irish bookies are expecting to see high turnover on both races.

Majestic Concorde, trained by the ‘King of Ballybrit’ - Dermot Weld, is the 6-1 favourite for the Galway Hurdle, whilst British raider Overturn is the current 7-1 market leader for the Galway Hurdle.

Hills are also betting on the Rooney Auctioneer-sponsored top jockey prizes, and the colour of the dress worn by the ‘best dressed lady’ - which will be presented on Thursday (Ladies Day).

Galway is the biggest betting event on the Irish racing calendar, and bookies are bracing themselves for another epic battle with the punters down in Ballybrit,” said William Hill’s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny.

Galway is known as the punters graveyard. However, it’ll be the bookies who’ll look like the walking dead if Dermot Weld has another bumper festival.

Majestic Concorde Heads Galway Plate Betting - 65 Acceptors At Forfeit Stage

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

A total of 65 horses have stood their ground at the latest forfeit stage for next Wednesday’s Tote Galway Plate at Ballybrit.

The Dermot Weld trained Majestic Concorde is now the 6-1 favourite for the race having been 8-1 earlier on in the week.

Other interesting movers over the last few days include the Willie Mullins trained Themoonandsixpence (12-1 to 8-1), Grand Slam Hero (12-1 to 10-1) and Nicanor (25-1 to 20-1).

Hills spokesman Tony Kenny stated ‘Majestic Concorde and Themoonandsixpence have been the two best backed horses in the race’.

‘However, both seem to perform better on a sound surface, and with the ground currently soft - we could see a real shake-up in the market if the ground remains the same or gets worse.’

Overturn Heads Galway Hurdle Betting - 42 Stand Ground

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A total of 42 horses have stood their ground at the latest forfeit stage for next Thursday’s Guinness Galway Hurdle.

The Donald McCain-trained Overturn heads betting for the race - with William Hill rating him a 7-1 shot to become the first British trainer winner of the two-mile hurdle since Sagaman in 1991.

Dirar, from the Gordon Elliott yard, is the 8-1 second favourite for the race, whilst last year’s winner Bahrain Storm is rated a 10-1 chance to record back-to-back successes in the Guinness Galway Hurdle.

Others near the head of the betting include the Dermot Weld trained New Phase (10-1), the Jessica Harrington trained Gimli’s Rock (12-1), and the top-weight Luska Lad (12-1).

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a British winner of the Galway Hurdle,’ said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny ‘but punters on both sides of the Irish sea seem to believe that Donald McCain’s Overturn could be the one to end Britain’s nineteen-year barren streak.’

Hanagan now odds-on for Jockeys’ Championship

Friday, July 9th, 2010

For the first time in almost three seasons a new name tops the ante-post betting for the Flat Jockeys Championship where Paul Hanagan is now odds-on at 10-11 with William Hill.

Richard Faheys stable jockey has transposed the long-time ante-post favourite Ryan Moore at the head of the betting who has been available as low as 1/4 with Hills since betting opened.

The defending champion now lies 3rd on the list behind Hanagan and Richard Hughes, with the former boasting a lead that continues to grow each day.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: No-one could have predicted the standings at this stage, with Paul Hanagan unthought-of at 33-1 in December. To say he is riding out of his skin is an understatement and hes now the first jockey to knock Ryan Moore off the top spot for almost three years. It is also not inconceivable that the current champion finishes outside the placings, with hefty competition in the form of Richard Hughes.

2010 British Jockeys Championship: 10-11 Paul Hanagan, 11-10 Ryan Moore, 9-1 Richard Hughes, 33-1 Frankie Dettori, 50-1 Kieren Fallon

Photo-finish Caption Competition - free bets to be bagged

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

As your Trackside Live scribe, I often get lonely sat here on my own…

…through the long evenings… awaiting the 9.20 at Kempton…

(que violins sound in the background)

So I want you to entertain me.

Better clarify that or who knows what I’ll get sent - stick your humorous captions underneath the horseracing-related image - the funnier and more original the better please. Judged fortnightly on Fridays, I will personally credit the winner’s William Hill account with a fiver free bet.

Only a fiver, I hear you cry? Don’t call me stingy, it’s just for a bit of fun. So comment away.

Don’t forget to include your correct email address when you post so I can contact you for an account number. Doh!

I’ll start this one off - ‘I’d heard Southwell was a specialist course, but this is just ridiculous’

Yes, I’m sure you can do much better…!
