The Clash of the Decade
The 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup promises to be one of the greatest races in the event’s history. Unless you’ve been spent the last month locked down in a sound-proof concrete bunker, you can’t have failed to hear about the massive confrontation looming between two of the finest racehorses to grace national hunt racing in several decades – Denman and Kauto Star.
Kauto Star is widely regarded as the finest horse to compete in national hunt racing since the great Irish champion Arkle. With one Cheltenham Gold Cup title under his belt, and an ability to easily outpace the best, Kauto Star is the favourite for the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Following close on Kauto Star’s heels is stable-mate Denman. Although Denman hasn’t yet picked up a major win, he boasts an impeccable record and has never lost a race. With Kauto Star as unpredictable as he is brilliant, there is every chance that the consistent Denman will have what it takes to triumph at the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Whichever of these two horses claims the cup, there’s one national hunt champion who is certain to emerge as a winner. Paul Nicholls is the trainer of both of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup favourites, not to mention an enviable selection of favourites for other key Cheltenham Festival races.
